A life jacket worn by Titanic survivor Laura Mabel Francatelli has sold for £670,000 at auction, becoming the only known Titanic survivor’s life jacket ever sold publicly.

Axar.az reports, citing BBC, the item was auctioned at Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes, Wiltshire, and far exceeded expectations after being estimated to fetch between £250,000 and £350,000.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said he was “ecstatic,” adding that the result “reflects the ongoing interest and passion for the story of the Titanic, and its passengers and crew.”

Francatelli, one of around 700 survivors of the 1912 disaster, used the life jacket before entering a lifeboat. The vest, which features 12 pockets along with shoulder rests and side straps, was also signed by survivors.

In the same auction, a Titanic lifeboat seat cushion sold for £390,000 and will go on display at the Titanic Museum Attraction in the United States.

The auction comes as commemorations continue marking 114 years since the sinking of the RMS Titanic.
