Germany hosts first side event of Global South NGO Platform

The first side event of the Global South NGO Platform, themed “Uniting for a Just World: Strengthening South-South Solidarity and Partnerships for Equitable Climate Solutions,” was held on June 19 on the margins of the June Climate Meetings (SB62) in Bonn, Germany.

In his remarks, Ramil Iskandarli, Acting Secretary General of the Global South NGO Platform, noted that the side event - which brought together 47 NGO representatives from 32 countries - continues the momentum of the “Baku Process.” He emphasized the platform’s critical role in uniting voices against global isolation.

The event featured panel discussions moderated by Nadima Rahimli, a member of the Platform Secretariat. The discussions highlighted Azerbaijan’s consistent efforts to bridge divides between the Global North and South, and to foster more inclusive and constructive dialogue through diplomatic engagement.

Speakers included Soha Banchekroun, Global South and African-led climate and development policy researcher; Menka Goundan, Program Director at the Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre for Women (ARROW); Maryam Majidova, Chairperson of the “Gender Hub Azerbaijan” Public Union; Professor Mizan R. Khan, Programme Director of the Least Developed Countries University Consortium on Climate Change; and Gulshan Akhundova, Chairperson of the “Woman Development and Future” Public Union.

The speakers commended Azerbaijan’s contributions to COP29, particularly its support for the least developed countries and small island states.
