India tests multi-influence mine to boost underwater defence capabilities

Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan over the Pahalgam terror attack, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have successfully carried out a combat firing (with reduced explosive) of the indigenous Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM), according to India Today.

The MIGM, an advanced underwater naval mine, was developed by the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory in Visakhapatnam, in collaboration with DRDO's High Energy Materials Research Laboratory in Pune and the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory in Chandigarh.

DRDO, sharing a video on X, said MIGM is designed to enhance the Indian Navy's capabilities against the modern stealth ships and submarines.

In a statement on X, the Defence Ministry confirmed the successful firing and mentioned that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had complimented DRDO, the Indian Navy, and the industry for this achievement. He added that the system would enhance the Indian Navy's undersea warfare capabilities.

The Office of the Defence Minister shared a video of the test on X and wrote that the minister "has complimented DRDO, Indian Navy and the industry on this achievement. He said that the system would further enhance undersea warfare capabilities of the Indian Navy."

MIGM is designed to counter modern stealth ships and submarines, strengthening the Indian Navy's defensive capabilities. Bharat Dynamics Limited, Visakhapatnam, and Apollo Microsystems Limited, Hyderabad, are the production partners for the system.

Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, confirmed that with the successful validation trial, the system is now ready for induction into the Indian Navy.
