EU ministers to debate Israel Association Agreement

The foreign ministers of the European Union are expected to discuss Spain’s proposal to suspend the EU–Israel Association Agreement at a ministerial meeting.

Axar.az reports, citing Euronews, Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia have called for discussions on suspending the agreement, arguing that Israel is in breach of its human rights obligations due to ongoing violations of the ceasefire, escalating violence in the West Bank, attacks on civilians in Lebanon, and other developments.

However, EU officials and diplomats note that there is currently no broad consensus among member states to suspend the agreement. Several member states including Germany and Italy remain opposed to the initiative, and others do not expect sufficient support for an immediate decision.

The European Commission has previously proposed a partial suspension of the agreement’s trade component, but the measure has stalled due to deep divisions among EU members.
