Representatives of Albanian-Udi Christian Community visit Aghoghlan Monastery in Lachin

Lachin, October 6, AZERTAC

Representatives of the Albanian-Udi Christian Community in Azerbaijan visited the ancient Aghoghlan Monastery in Lachin district, where they performed religious rites, lit candles, and offered prayers.

The monastery is an ancient religious site that predates Christianity and has served as a Christian place of worship since the 4th century.

During the occupation of Lachin, its architectural structure and interior were altered, with attempts made to present it as an Armenian church.

The monument’s structure and architectural features are regarded as key indicators of its Albanian origin. Located on the banks of the Aghoghlan River, the 5th–6th-century monastery was rebuilt in the 9th century after suffering damage over the centuries.

During the occupation, the monastery and other Albanian heritage sites were subjected to alterations aimed at distorting their historical origins.

Azerbaijan maintains a tradition of respect and tolerance toward religious monuments, with mosques, churches, and synagogues forming part of the country’s historical and cultural heritage.
