Authorities in Texas, the US, have updated the death toll from the sudden flooding in Kerr County to more than 110 people, including dozens of children.
The number of missing persons in Kerr County now exceeds 160, with more than ten additional people reported missing in other parts of the state following the widespread flooding, Caliber.Az reports via American media.
Earlier reports indicated that 10 girls and a counsellor from the Camp Mystic summer camp remain missing. The camp’s director, Dick Eastland, is confirmed among the deceased.
The devastating floods were caused by heavy rains and the overflow of the Guadalupe River, which submerged the Camp Mystic girls’ summer camp.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with the U.S. Coast Guard actively involved in evacuating residents from affected areas.
The flooding, triggered by a mesoscale convective complex and remnants of Tropical Storm Barry, brought 5–11 inches of rain, with some areas receiving up to 15 inches, from July 4 to 7. The Guadalupe River surged dramatically, rising 26 feet in 45 minutes in Kerrville and up to 29 feet in Hunt, overwhelming low-lying areas, including Camp Mystic.
